Home Remedies for Wisdom Teeth Pain

Our wisdom teeth normally erupt between the ages of 18 to 25. They can give you certain amount of pain especially when they are infected or impacted. I would suggest that you should consult your dental surgeon if you are facing severe wisdom tooth pain. In the meantime, here are some home remedies that you can try out to ease your wisdom tooth pain.

Garlic

This common household ingredient is one of the most popular home remedies to cure wisdom tooth pain. Crushed garlic produces allicin, which is an organosulfur compound. Allicin has antibacterial properties and provides temporary relief from wisdom teeth pain or normal toothache.  Other than using garlic as a temporary measure, you can also use onion as an alternative to alleviate wisdom tooth pain.

Method 1: Chew a clove of raw garlic.

Method 2: Crush garlic and place it around the wisdom tooth area.

Clove oil

Clove oil is an essential oil derived from clove plant. Clove oil is a highly effective home remedy to cure wisdom tooth pain/toothache because of its active ingredient, eugenol.  Due to its analgesic and antiseptic action, clove oil is also a common ingredient found in mouthwash and toothpaste.

To eliminate wisdom tooth pain/toothache, just apply clove oil using a cotton bud around the wisdom tooth area. If clove oil is not available, you can chew a couple of clove leaves to obtain the similar pain relieving effect.  However, clove oil is not recommended for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

 Salt water

Some amount of wisdom tooth pain can also be relieved by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. Add a table spoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Salt water helps to flush out bacteria and sooth the inflamed gum by drawing some amount of fluids which caused gum swelling.

Ice

Wrap some ice cubes using a cloth and gently massage around the jaw area to dull the nerve endings and eliminate some amount of wisdom tooth pain. Extreme temperatures may aggravate the pain more therefore do not directly apply ice to the tooth. You can also apply ice to subside some amount of swelling after undergoing wisdom tooth extraction.

Peppermint

To relief wisdom tooth pain/toothache, just place peppermint leaves around the affected area for 15 minutes. Besides that, you can also boil peppermint leaves with half a tablespoon salt and drink the mixture.

Peppermint has antiseptic properties and it is believed that calcium antagonism which is found in peppermint oil is very effective in eliminating pain.

Cucumber

Another cost effective home remedy is by placing cucumber around wisdom tooth area. Cut few slices of cucumber and freeze them inside your refrigerator. After that, hold the chilled cucumber around wisdom tooth area to relief the pain.

Acupuncture

We are not acupuncture expert, but it is believed that acupuncture can provide temporarily relief from toothache/wisdom tooth pain. You can search online for more acupuncture methods in relieving toothaches.

Besides using home remedies, you can also purchase pain killers such as codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, from drugstores to ease wisdom tooth pain.  However, narcotic medications can be addictive and you should consult your dentist before consuming them. Most importantly, relax yourself and take a deep breath. This will keep your mind off the pain.
